Moroccan Black Soap (Savon Beldi)
We love a good tradition at Alchemy. Ingredients and products that stand the test of time. Like Moroccan Black Soap. Its a simple Castile soap paste made with plant fat and lye: olive and ash.
What makes it work like magic are these trace minerals in the humic acid that become bio-available in the soapmakng process. Humic minerals destroy toxins, oxygenate cells, and are a catalyst to improve collagen production.
Savon ‘beldi’ means traditional soap: ‘beldi’ means ‘of the country’ -authentic, traditional. The word applies to certain rugs, blown glassware, textiles and this special.
The black soap is also used in the Hammam - bath houses that are a key component of any neighborhood (like a bakery and house of worship). Folks can bring their own cosmetics and bathing tool, or can hire a scrub down and massage.
There are some differences between the ‘traditional’ Hammam and the modern spa-style Hammam that cater to travelers. A friend who grew up in Morocco tells me that a lot of people prefer to pay for a more private space within the neighborhood hammam.
To use the Beldi Black Soap at home: Take a steamy shower and apply a thin layer. Let it sit for five minutes then scrub off. No slipping in the tub! The gentle exfoliating of the soap plus the nutrient rich plat fats nourish the skin.
