Clary Sage in Skincare + Perfumery

Clary Sage, sometimes referred to as "Clear Eye" has been used since ancient times for healing and to enhance clairvoyance and vivid dreams. Throughout history clary sage has enjoyed the status of sacred plant with purifying and protective properties.

It’s not uncommon to find claims that certain plants are miraculous: they cure all the things. But in the case of Clary Sage, scientific study into the main constituents are proving the point.

One primary component is sclareol and researchers are looking at everything from Parkinsin’s research, to treating menopausal symptoms.

The aroma of Clary Sage is a bit polarizing as it is a potent aromatic. My family can’t stand the smell of Fern when she has been chasing some imagined creature through our own patch of plants.

Used in ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece for medicine, worship and magic, the essences also enjoy a rich history used in fortified wines and fragrance design.

Recent research does show that clary sage essential oil can reduce markers of stress emotionally and physically. For example the National Institutes of Health has done some study of the effect on mental wellness including improving sense of hopefulness and boosting confidence link. And another study shows that incidents of stress-related blood pressure is soothed by the sent and application of the essence.
