Blue Jay - Spirit Water Cologne

The name “Blue Jay” is both intentional and happenstance.

The blue bouf and the jay feather were a natural pairing, which led me down the rabbit hole of research into the life and magical meaning of blue jays.

Jays belong to the same bird family as magpies, ravens and crows. And have a similar reputation and witchy connections. They’ll definitely steal nests and gang up on other birds. They are boisterous, brash and nasty sometimes. Which frankly didn’t really turn me off. There is so much pressure to be positive all the time and only work in the light.

But shadow work is part of magic too. “Magic” isn’t only right-handed, sanitized and pretty. There is wisdom in the dark of our minds, and earth magic happening in dim reaches. The world doesn’t operate on just love and light - hence the jay.

In some traditions the blue jay is a tattle-tale friend of the devil, but more likely playing both sides. In one story the jay attempts to give a freezing man some fire from the underworld. But when he’s caught, he must repay the folks of the underworld by delivering kindling.

The jay epitomizes ‘trickster’ right to their very coloring- they aren’t blue. They are brown, it's a trick of light and the function of our eyes that makes them appear blue to us. They are not easily fooled either. When they inhabit your dreams, they are a message to pay attention. Found feathers are your cue to better communicate with friends and family.

  • The blue jay may represent loss, but is also a symbol of hope and determination, time to tune in, and a sign to face your problems head-on.

  • If a blue jay is appearing in front of you that indicates that you need to communicate more clearly and it also tells you that you need to take a closer look at the people you are dealing with.

  • The blue jay is also encouraging you to be bold and follow your dreams.

As I dug around on the interwebs and read about folk traditions and the blue jay, the name couldn’t be extracted - and Alchemy’s first new spirit water became Blue Jay.

Like Alchemy’s Florida Water, Blue Jay is formulated with natural essences of citrus and herbs as potion and perfume. Inspired by folk-magic and the prevailing wisdom that bad smells bring dis-ease, Florida Water is nostalgic, Blue Jay is fresh and modern.

Magic and medicine, potions and perfume, it can be hard to separate them one from the other. Early scents were created as elixirs to treat dis-ease, and ill-wishing as much as for their ability to delight the senses.

In folk magic the jay is a bold trickster, a harbinger of change, and a call to follow your dreams. Made with fragrant herbs and flowers like clary sage and blue tansy, selected for their use in perfumery, healing and witch-work. You’re invited to enjoy Blue Jay as a lively fragrance or use it to conjure up some good juju,
